Some of Leah’s tips include:

• Remember the importance of tone and volume.
• Learn to say “I guess you didn’t realize …” or “I’m sorry I wasn’t clear …”
• Remember to start with appreciation or a compliment.
• Pick your battles! Is this one worth it?
• “It would really help me if … xyz. Is there anything I can do to make that easier?”
• Be vulnerable. “How can we fix our problem together? I can’t solve it on my own.”
• Some situations are predictable. If you know it will get sticky, discuss it beforehand.
  • Remember the 3 P’s:
    • If it’s Predictable, it’s Preventable with a Pre-conversation!

Try This at Home:

This week, try to communicate through a misunderstanding. The key will be: instead of saying, “You just don’t understand me!”, acknowledge that he can’t read your mind and explain yourself.
