Viewer Questions:
How does a busy woman take care of her health?
- By understanding a new version of a Health Pyramid.
- The base of this Health Pyramid is having value and purpose in life. Without this, a woman won’t be healthy. We’re starting inside out. We need to wake up each morning with aspirations.
- The next level is emotional and social health. Stress has a huge impact on our health. What is stress? When we lose control. Social health means making time for people who are good for us- this is not just psychological; this is for our physical health.
- Nutrition is crucial.
- We must make time for exercise without any excuses. Any excuse can be surmounted for something so important.
- Next is screening. Detecting things early saves a huge amount of trouble, however busy we might be.
- Functional medicine looks at the cause, not the cures, i.e. finding what is going wrong.
Temima: We moved away from my hometown for my husband’s university. There isn’t a large community there and I’m depleted of a social life and I feel like I’m not the same person. We will be here for many years and I’ve no idea how I’ll survive. Any suggestions?
Social health comes from making an effort, sticking your neck out and taking a risk. You’ll get amazing returns.
How does functional medicine differ from mainstream medicine?
Mainstream medicine will detect the problem and offer a cure, which may or may not work.
Functional medicine will detect the causes and work on those which could fix the problem.
Can you give some health tips for a busy mom?
- It needs thought and planning to make a health plan. Book in times for exercise, visiting a friend, etc otherwise life will run along without any changes.
- Infuse value into mundane things. For example, trying to connect to every person we meet. Or, viewing work as a way to help people, not just to make money.
- When we pray, we tend to focus on the prayers about asking G-d for money, we should also focus on praying for health.
- Developing ourselves and giving to others makes an eternal difference; we should be aware of this.
Ilana: Everything sounds great but honestly, I’m a little fed up with health tips because I always start off motivated and things never stick. Can you give me a tip on how to implement this in a real way that will stick?
Find people to help you stick with a program. Also, acknowledging there’ll be ups and downs and that’s normal can help get back on track.
Ruchie: I have a few teenage daughters and whilst I try to model a healthy lifestyle, they aren’t interested and not mindful of their diets. What is the balance of guiding them without it being damaging?
Enjoying healthy food is a process. It’s vital not to be extreme with children or they’ll break away.
Chani: There are so many diets out there, it’s hard to know what’s healthy or doing damage. What’s a healthy way for a woman to lose weight in a busy, hectic lifestyle?
- Make it simple.
- Try to eradicate processed foods, sugars and oils slowly, extreme measures will fail.
- The Mediterranean diet always wins. This is essentially vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Don’t eat at night- these calories aren’t burnt, they’re converted to fat tissue. Try to stop eating by 7.00pm. Try to have a 12-14 hour fast overnight and into the morning.
Toby: Does the body absorb vitamins or is it just a money-making business?
The best way of getting vitamins is certainly from fresh food. Some vitamin supplements should be added such as vitamin D taken with vitamin K2. If someone has a deficiency, then vitamins should be taken.
